There are many studies on the failure modes of electrolytic capacitors, and mainly aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Indeed, from the understanding of the mechanisms and failure modes of a capacitor, it is possible to apply a maintenance in order to know the remaining lifetime of the component.
In order to predict the trend of electrolytic capacitors, one can imagine a hybrid electrolytic capacitor, a technology that would combine the advantages of electrolytic capacitors such as high electrode surface (pressed and sintered, porous, …) with a composite hybrid dielectric structure to achieve greater specific energy .
The most commonly used model for electrolytic capacitors is based on Arrhenius' law, which describes the influence of the constraints related to the ambient temperature and the current flowing through the capacitors, and on the Coffin-Manson empirical law for the consideration of the applied voltage.
Mechanisms and failure modes according to the stress in an electrolytic capacitor. A normal use of the capacitor leads to the evaporation of the electrolyte and the repair of the oxide layer. These are two causes of electrolyte disappearance, which is the main cause of capacitor degradation under normal conditions.
The moments when the aging indicators reach their limit value set by the user or by the standard correspond to the end-of-life of the capacitor. The end of life of an electrolytic capacitor under thermal and electrical constraints is defined by a 20 % decrease in capacitance or a 100 % increase in ESR , , , .
Electrolytic capacitors are known to be sensitive to temperature and frequency variations. In fact, an electrolytic capacitor has several modes and causes of failure. The main reason for temperature dependence is due to the electrolyte and for the frequency it is due to the dielectric oxide .

For electrolytic capacitors with unknown positive and negative signs, the above-mentioned leakage resistance measurement method can be used to distinguish. That is, first measure the leakage resistance randomly, remember its size, and then exchange the test leads to measure a resistance value.
An aluminum electrolytic capacitor, illustrated in Fig. 2 consists of a cathode aluminum foil, electrolytic paper, electrolyte, and an aluminum oxide layer on the anode foil surface, which acts as the dielectric. When in con-tact with the electrolyte, the oxide layer possesses an excellent forward direction insulation property (Gasperi, 1996). Together with magnified effective …
X-ray inspection of a capacitor can reveal if there is any obvious anomaly inside the capacitor, such as distortion/bulging of the coiled structure inside the capacitor body, which can lead to short circuit of the electrolytic capacitor. No anomalies were found in the capacitors from either the hot or cold region of the board in X-ray inspection.

An electrolytic capacitor is popularly known as a polarized capacitor, wherein the anode has more positive voltage than the cathode. They are used in filtering applications, low-pass filters, audio amplifier circuits, and many more. Metals like aluminum, tantalum, niobium, manganese, etc. form an oxide layer in the electrochemical process, which blocks the electric current flowing in one ...
