When a capacitor fails a short circuit (Figure 3), DC current flows through the capacitor and the shorted capacitor behaves like a resistor. For example, if a capacitor, placed between the input line and ground to remove AC current such as ripple current or noise, is shorted, DC current directly flows from the input to ground.
The open circuit failure mode results in an almost complete loss of capacitance. The high ESR failure can result in self heating of the capacitor which leads to an increase of internal pressure in the case and loss of electrolyte as the case seal fails and areas local to the capacitor are contaminated with acidic liquid.
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors and electric double-layer capacitors (EDLC) *7 use a conductive liquid called electrolyte. If this electrolyte leaks out of the capacitor housing or sealing area, it can cause the capacitor to lose its function, short circuit the circuit board, or have a negative effect on surrounding components.
The dielectric breakdown of the oxide layer in electrolytic capacitors develops a short circuit. This failure mode may result from excessive application of operating voltage, reverse voltage, or ripple current.
Continued operation of the capacitor can result in increased end termination resistance, additional heating, and eventual failure. The "open" condition is caused by a separation of the end-connection of the capacitor. This condition occurs more often with capacitors of low capacitance and a diameter of less than .25 inch.
An open failure also occurred if the internal wiring between the capacitor element and the external terminal is broken or significantly increased resistance at connections (the dashed red line in Figure 2). There are various/many specifications and connection methods of external terminals and internal wiring.

Short circuits are caused by burred or rough foil edges as well as thin regions in the separator paper and deficiencies in the oxide film; both of which lead to dielectric breakdown. Since all products are subjected to aging before shipping, short circuited capacitors are rarely found in the field.
Failing aluminum electrolytic capacitors can have significantly adverse effects on electronic circuits. Most technicians have seen the tale-tell signs – bulging, chemical leaks, and even tops that have blown off. When they fail, the circuits that contain them no longer perform as designed – most often affecting power supplies. For example ...
The fault phenomena that are prone to occur in fixed capacitors are leakage, short circuit, open circuit, and poor contact of the internal leads of the capacitor (the …

A capacitor can be mechanically destroyed or may malfunction if it is not designed, manufactured, or installed to meet the vibration, shock or acceleration requirement within a particular application. Movement of the capacitor within …
When an electrolytic capacitor fails, it can be because of a short circuit, circuit damage, or even an explosion. Most electrolytic capacitor degradation results from a common failure mode: the vaporization or leakage of electrolyte.

However, when the capacitor fails in an open circuit or in a short circuit, it will be accompanied by abnormalities in capacitance, loss angle, and insulation resistance. Therefore, the electrical parameter out-of-tolerance failure is often an electrical performance characterization after the open circuit or short circuit failure.

Leakage or overflow of electrolyte: If the airtightness of the seal is poor or the safety valve is opened, the electrolyte will leak or overflow from the capacitor and circulate to high-energy areas (such as high-energy parts on circuit boards), causing short circuit and arcing, causing the electrolyte to catch fire and then causing the ...

A capacitor can be mechanically destroyed or may malfunction if it is not designed, manufactured, or installed to meet the vibration, shock or acceleration requirement within a particular application. Movement of the capacitor within the case can cause low I.R., shorts or opens. Fatigue in the leads or mounting brackets can also cause a ...

The fault phenomena that are prone to occur in fixed capacitors are leakage, short circuit, open circuit, and poor contact of the internal leads of the capacitor (the connection between the pole piece and the lead wire). Especially the failure rate of electrolytic capacitors is much higher than other types of capacitors. Common faults of ...

Al-CAPS can fail in short/catastrophic breakdown, open or low capacitance mode. High leakage or short in these CAPS, like Ta-CAPS, also occurs as a result of dielectric compromise or by-pass of the active CAP. Fig. 10 lists some of the common causes for high leakage or short failure modes of Al-CAPS. The by-pass could occur internally or ...
