The internal short circuit was triggered by the rupture and deformation of structures within the battery, such as electrodes and separators. The higher the battery SOC, the faster the average temperature rise rate, leading to more severe thermal runaway.
Once the temperature of LiBs surpasses 90 °C, the exothermic chemical reactions within the battery accelerate, initiating a positive feedback loop of increased heat generation. The escalating temperature can lead to thermal runaway, ultimately resulting in fires and explosions [2, 3].
Fig. 16 presents the ESC test results of 6-series battery modules from Groups 6 and 7. Upon triggering the short circuit, the short current rapidly escalates to 150 A, and the module voltage plummets to approximately 0.5 V, as illustrated in Fig. 16 (A) and (B).
This is due to two main reasons: first, a short circuit in a series module can cause some cells to undergo polarity reversal (as shown in Fig. 15 C and D), potentially leading to electrode material damage, electrolyte decomposition, and gas generation, thereby accelerating battery degradation .
For thick electrodes, a large amount of Li + will preferentially intercalate into the material particles in the upper layer of the cathode during a short circuit, causing the volume of the lithiated region to expand while the non-lithiated region remains unchanged.
