Capacitors are essential passive components used in every modern circuit and electronics application for smoothing and filtering power lines and for bypassing signals. In AC/DC EMC filter applications, two special classes of capacitors – Class-X and Class-Y – are used to filter AC power-source noise and are commonly referred to “safety capacitors”.
We usually use the safety capacitors with voltage rating more than double the expected voltage in our filtering applications. X capacitors are available in classes X1 to X3 and Y capacitors are available in classes Y1 to Y4. Among these most commonly available classes are X1, X2, Y1 and Y2.
This is also why Japanese capacitors are always preferred. However, there are two problems with using Japanese-made caps: their cost is higher and sometimes there are availability problems. Most PSU factories are located in China, so they have to import the capacitors from Japan, requiring additional time and shipping costs.
When it comes to electrolytic caps, since they are hugely affected by increased temperatures caused by heat build-up at the PSU's internals (but mostly by current ripple), the caps made by Japanese manufacturers are the safest and highest-quality choice. This is also why Japanese capacitors are always preferred.
