Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) projects have a critical role to play in the future of sustainable energy storage and grid stability. As renewable energy sources continue to grow in popularity, PSH projects will be a crucial tool in supporting their development and integration into the grid.
Seven pumped-storage projects under construction in Europe, Africa, and Asia – all expected to be operating by 2015 – will provide more than 4,100 MW of electrical capacity. While these are not the only projects under development, they provide good examples of the type of work occurring.

Launched in November 2020 by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and chaired by the U.S. Department of Energy, the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower is a government-led multi-stakeholder platform to shape and enhance the role of pumped storage hydropower in future power systems.
Another first was recently announced by Gilkes Energy in the UK, who released details of its planned 900MW Earba Storage Project in Scotland, the company’s first pumped storage hydropower scheme. Earba Storage Project will store up to 33,000 MWh of energy, making it the largest such scheme in the UK in terms of energy stored.
The first two units were connected to the grid in October 2022. The 1.2 GW project, being developed by Anhui Jinzhai Pumped Storage Power Co., LTD, one of the divisions of State Grid XinYuan, will play a role in helping China achieve its goal of building more than 200 pumped storage stations with a combined capacity of 270GW by 2025.
