The tests provided an in-depth study of external short circuit (ESC) failure and thermal runaway (TR) behavioral characteristics. The results indicate that all the temperature changes of the short-circuit batteries were found to be in an upward and then downward trend.
This results in a sharp increase in the temperature of the battery and in launching of the second and third main reactions of the thermal runaway. Also the batteries' mechanical deformation can be a way to initiate the thermal runaway. The main purpose of the deformation is obtaining of internal short circuits of the electrodes.
The new batteries got really hot - too hot to touch. What causes this to happen? Batteries can heat up if you have a short circuit. Instead of the electricity going through a circuit where it is used up in various ways or resisted, it just goes straight through the battery, and is then conducted back around into the battery again.
And with the increase of short-circuit current rate, the temperature rise gradually increased. In particular, thermal runaway occurred at 25C and the maximum temperature exceeds 500 °C. Different SOC batteries showed different degree of voltage fluctuation.
Only in very rare cases in the nickel‑cadmium batteries, when the thermal runaway was very powerful and the separators burned out more than a quarter of the electrode surface, we did observe the internal short circuits of the electrodes during the thermal runaway. The similar situation is watched in the lithium-ion batteries.
It should be noted that the tested battery is of NMC chemistry. Thus, the battery chemical system and AC frequency could be the factors that influence the heating effect. The RMS values of APC, SRC, and TWC at the same current amplitude and frequency decrease in sequence.
