Hydrogen can be used in combination with electrolytic cells and fuel cells, not only as energy storage but also for frequency regulation, voltage regulation, peak shaving, and valley filling, cogeneration and industrial raw materials on the load side, contributing to the diversified development of high proportion of renewable energy systems.
The use of a hydrogen conversion and storage system yields total annualized cost reductions of 72–80% for the self-sufficient supply of electricity and heat throughout the year compared to lithium-ion battery systems.
Conceived by a Dutch research group, the proposed system is intended to store surplus renewable electricity via hydrogen generation and battery storage, with the latter being used only when hydrogen generation is not immediately available.
