The nickel–cadmium battery (Ni–Cd battery or NiCad battery) is a type of rechargeable battery using nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes.
A metal is rolled with cadmium and separator layers and kept in redox so that the chemical reaction produces the DC voltage. Batteries have been popular for a long, and in an effort to increase the efficiency of the battery more and more chemical elements are used. This makes the construction compact. Nickel-cadmium aircraft batteries generally consist of a steel case containing individual cells connected in series. The number of cells depends on the particular application, but generally 19 or 20 cells are used. The end cells of the series are connected to the battery receptacle located on the outside of the case.
A nickel-cadmium cell has two plates. The active material of the positive plate (anode) is Ni (OH) 4 and the negative plate (cathode) is of cadmium (Cd) when fully charged. The electrolyte is a solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) with a small addition of lithium hydrate which increases the capacity and life of the battery.
