The efficiencies of typical commercial crystalline silicon solar cells with standard cell structures are in the range of 16–18% for monocrystalline substrates and 15–17% for polycrystalline substrates. The substrate thickness used in most standard crystalline cells is 160–240 μm.
Crystalline silicon PV cells are the most popular solar cells on the market and also provide the highest energy conversion efficiencies of all commercial solar cells and modules. The structure of typical commercial crystalline-silicon PV cells is shown in Figure 1.
Their failure modes are well understood and avoidable. Crystalline silicon modules have substantially higher efficiency than any non-concentrating modules on the market, which reduces the cost of the area-related balance of systems components. As the cost of the modules declines, the latter becomes a dominant cost of photovoltaic electricity.
Turning to the results, the conversion efficiency of c-Si solar cells has a maximum at a given value of the thickness, which is in the range 10–80 µm for typical parameters of non-wafer-based silicon.
Improving the efficiency of silicon-based solar cells beyond the 29% limit requires the use of tandem structures, which potentially have a much higher (~40%) efficiency limit. Both perovskite/silicon and III-V/silicon multijunctions are of great interest in this respect.
The peak theoretical efficiency in a crystalline silicon solar cell based on a single homojunction and a bulk silicon energy bandgap of 1.1 eV is 30% under 1 sun AM 1.5 illumination.
