(Reuters: Mike Blake) After an unprecedented period of increases, the wholesale price of solar panels is tipped to fall, with some experts predicting sizeable drops of 10 per cent per year for the next decade. In 2020, the cost per watt of solar energy increased for the first time in decades, as manufacturing and shipping ran into the pandemic.
The larger the panel sizes, the greater the chance of reduced yield because of the self-shadowing effect but also the higher the amount of energy generated by the panel. Overall, the rate of energy harvested per m 2 of panels changes marginally with the increased size of panels.
The amount should be small since, as a rule of thumb, a panel’s performance falls off by about 0.5% for each degree of temperature rise. I haven’t checked the Oxford data but I assume the rise here in the last fifteen years was around 0.2 degrees, meaning a small 0.1% impact on annual output. But what about sun, which is far more important?
Tim Buckley, director of Climate Energy Finance, speaks to <b>pv magazine</b> about the current steep trajectory of solar module prices. He estimates that PV panels prices will end up dropping by 40% this year and predicts the closure of old technology and sub-scale solar manufacturing facilities, both in China and globally.
So although the solar panels may be degrading faster, the fall is disguised by the rise in bright sunshine. Using a very imperfect piece of statistical analysis, I estimated what the underlying rate of panel degradation is, adjusting for the disguise of increased hours of bright sun.
A big reason why solar prices could continue to drop is significant development in the solar industry at large. The federal solar tax credit will be in place for at least the next 10 years. That means players in the solar industry -- from installers to manufacturers -- have received a green light to invest in their operations.
