Common and less well known failure modes associated with capacitor manufacture defects, device and product assembly problems, inappropriate specification for the application, and product misuse are discussed for ceramic, aluminium electrolytic, tantalum and thin film capacitors.
The failure mode of electrolytic capacitors is relatively slow and manifests over periods of months rather than seconds which can be the case with short circuit capacitor failure modes. Therefore condition monitoring may be practical and useful for these components.
Advancements in failure analysis have been made in root cause determination and stress testing methods of capacitors with extremely small (approximately 200 nm) defects. Subtrac-tive imaging has enabled a non-destructive means of locating a capacitor short site, reducing the FIB resources needed to analyze a defect.
The open circuit failure mode results in an almost complete loss of capacitance. The high ESR failure can result in self heating of the capacitor which leads to an increase of internal pressure in the case and loss of electrolyte as the case seal fails and areas local to the capacitor are contaminated with acidic liquid.
The root cause was found to be voiding in the dielectric layer of a capacitor near the edges or seams. In all cases the capacitor on the voltage control line of the VCO failed. In addition, destructive and nondestructive capacitor stress testing methods were studied.
Some common failure acceleration models used in capacitor lifetime prediction are the Arrhenius and Eyring models for temperature-dependent stresses, and the inverse power law for voltage and humidity stresses. Arrhenius proposed a chemical kinetics model thatshowed the temperature dependence of reaction rates.

What happens when a capacitor is over voltage?
Air spaced capacitors are usually not destroyed by high voltage but will arc over if the voltage is high enough. Removal of the voltage is sufficient to restore the capacitor to full capability.A 5.5 volt capacitor would be unusual. The DTR line from a computer''s serial port may carry up to +15 Volts or -15 volts, so the capacitor should be rated at at least 25 volts. This …
