They can be customized for various energy needs, making them suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial use. Additionally, ongoing advancements in solar PV technology, coupled with decreasing costs and supportive policies, have solidified its position as the primary choice for Distributed Generation.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have become the most widely used in recent years. These systems involve installing photovoltaic solar panels on rooftops, facades, or carports, for example. In many cases, they are connected to the conventional electrical grid, enabling energy exchange between the generation site and the grid.
However, PV systems are different. There are centralized large-area PV systems built in areas such as deserts like the Gobi to make full use of abandoned land resources. In general, distributed photovoltaics are built on places such as building roofs, factory roofs, and vegetable greenhouses to make full use of space.
To date, EDP has contracted almost 1 GWp of capacity in the region, having already installed more than 65% of that capacity. EDP is also expected to install five times as many panels over the next three years than it has installed to date. Today EDP stands out as the leader in distributed solar among European-based operators.
In many cases, they are connected to the conventional electrical grid, enabling energy exchange between the generation site and the grid. The popularity of solar PV systems is attributed to their scalability and adaptability.
With half of the world’s electricity to come from solar in future – and half of that DG arrays – utilities will have to embrace the VPPs expected to become widespread in the US in the next two years, and later in Australia, parts of Europe, and, potentially strong DER markets such as Japan.
