Other Chinese Nuclear Power Innovations The start-up Beijing Betavolt New Energy Technology Company Ltd., established in April 2021, claims to have developed a miniature atomic energy battery that can generate electricity stably and autonomously for 50 years without the need for charging or maintenance.
“Besides aviation applications, isotope batteries are also used in submarine navigation beacons, heart pacemakers, and deep-sea cables,” said Dr Zhang Shixu, an associate professor from the School of Nuclear Science and Technology at Lanzhou University in northwest China.
China’s Nuclear Energy Administration has asserted that “90 percent of the technology in the new plant was developed within China.” China is also leading development and deployment of a new fleet of cost-competitive small modular reactors. China likely stands 10 to 15 years ahead of the United States in nuclear power.
Chinese company Betavolt has announced an atomic energy battery for consumers, with a touted 50-year lifespan and which uses a diamond semiconductor material.
The company holds a 42 percent share of China’s nuclear energy market and contributes 2.04 percent of the country’s annual electricity production. Nuclear power generation accounts for 90 percent of the company’s $9.8 billion annual revenues (the remainder from other renewables).
They anticipate that this energy breakthrough will position China competitively in the emerging era of AI technology. The initial nuclear battery developed by Betavolt delivers 100 microwatts of power and has a voltage of 3V, while measuring a tiny 15x15x5 cubic millimeters. The company plans to produce a battery with 1 watt of power by 2025.
