In 2019, EPRI began the Battery Energy Storage Fire Prevention and Mitigation – Phase I research project, convened a group of experts, and conducted a series of energy storage site surveys and industry workshops to identify critical research and development (R&D) needs regarding battery safety.
Fire departments need data, research, and better training to deal with energy storage system (ESS) hazards. These are the key findings shared by UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) and presented by Sean DeCrane, International Association of Fire Fighters Director of Health and Safety Operational Services at SEAC’s May 2023 General Meeting.
In addition, you can join a SEAC working group, including the Storage Fire Detection working group and the ESS Standards working group, that’s working to improve fire safety with ESS. Lastly, join SEAC for a virtual workshop on safety and risk considerations when permitting ESS.
A fixed firefighting system does not stop an already occurring thermal runaway sequence within a battery module, but it can prevent fire spread from module to module, or from pack to pack, or to adjacent combustibles within the space. The afected module is likely to be fully lost, but the adjacent modules can be saved.
Setting up minimum separation from walls, openings, and other structural elements. The National Fire Protection Association NFPA 855 Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems provides the minimum requirements for mitigating hazards associated with ESS of diferent battery types.
Recommendation: Research and testing on fire suppression and explosion prevention systems for lithium-ion battery ESS should address project sites over an extended period of time.

These fire tests revealed that water-based agents are beneficial compared to gaseous agents as cooling is essential when fighting battery fires. [4, 5, 6] Pictures and videos are often used to argue that an extinguishing agent is suitable for fighting a battery fire.
In 2017, UL released Standard 9540A entitled Standard for Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runaway Fire Propagation in Battery Energy Storage Systems. Following UL''s lead, the NFPA® introduced the 2020 edition of NFPA 855: Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems®.
When it comes to fire suppression systems for Energy Storage Systems (ESS), two commonly used methods are water mist, in the case of T-REX, we use the Tiborex Absolute and Argon gas-based suppression systems. Both approaches have their unique advantages and considerations. Let''s compare the two in the context of ESS. Suppression Mechanism:
Eray High density energy source Nominal Capacity 100kW/215kWh Number of cell cycles >8000 Firefighting methods PACK level mAh 280Ah system efficiency ≥94% Cooling method

For energy storage stations without fire fighting equipment, such as water mist fire extinguishing system, gas fire extinguishing system or smoke prevention, the fire alarm controller generally has the function of linkage control which can realize linkage control of fire fighting equipment according to predetermined logic and time sequence. However, under the …
The stationary Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) market is expected to experience rapid growth. This trend is driven primarily by the need to decarbonize the economy and create more decentralized and resilient, ''smart'' power grids. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are one of the main technologies behind this growth. With higher energy density, faster charging and longer life …
The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), in partnership with UL Solutions and the Underwriters Laboratory''s Fire Safety Research Institute, released "Considerations for Fire Service Response to Residential Battery Energy Storage System Incidents." The scope of this document covers the fire safety aspects of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) in industrial and commercial applications with the primary focus on active fire protection.
First, the volatile nature of thermal runaway means that traditional firefighting methods may not be effective, as water or standard fire extinguishers can fail to cool the battery''s core, potentially leading to reignition. Second, the compact and ubiquitous nature of these batteries, found in everything from personal electronics to large-scale energy storage systems, …
