Air-cooled battery thermal management system (BTMS) is one of the most commonly used solutions to maintain the appropriate temperature of battery pack in electric vehicle. In the present study, the cooling efficiency of the air-cooled BTMS is improved through designing the flow pattern of the system.
The battery thermal management system with air cooling is widely used in EVs owing to its advantages such as low cost, simple structure, easy installation, and maintenance, as well as the lower weight of the overall system and lack of leakage when compared with other cooling techniques .
Process of designing and optimization of an air cooled battery thermal management system contains some stages. First of all, each battery cell and adjacent fin has been simulated with an estimated mass flow rate of the coolant air to obtain an appropriate fin width. The flow rate assumed 5 cfm for the space between two battery cells.
A system with an effective control strategy is proposed for battery cooling. The J-type, U-type and L-type flow types are integrated in the system. Uneven parallel channels widths are designed to improve the system performance. Air-cooled systems are widely used in electric vehicles for the thermal management of battery packs.
Zhoujian et al. studied a battery thermal management system with direct liquid cooling using NOVEC 7000 coolant. The proposed cooling system provides outstanding thermal management efficiency for battery, with further maximum temperature of the battery’s surface, reducing as the flow rate of coolant increases.
8. Outlook Within the scope of this review, the concept of air cooled battery thermal management systems for electric vehicles have been presented. Classification criteria of all other BTMS methods have been briefly highlighted; while benefits and drawbacks of air cooled BTMS in comparison with other EV cooling strategy have been discussed.
