The use of retired power batteries in energy storage power stations is an effective emission-reduction method. China has committed to the goal of carbon neutrality, but there is a lack of detailed elaboration on how improving the quality of economic development will affect China’s carbon emissions, and achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.
Battery energy storage systems have been investigated as storage solutions due to their responsiveness, efficiency, and scalability. Storage systems based on the second use of discarded electric vehicle batteries have been identified as cost-efficient and sustainable alternatives to first use battery storage systems.
Potential of electric vehicle batteries second use in energy storage systems is investigated. Future scale of electric vehicles, battery degradation and energy storage demand projections are analyzed. Research framework for Li-ion batteries in electric vehicles and energy storage systems is built.
Furthermore, the paper identifies economic, environmental, technological, and regulatory obstacles to the incorporation of repurposed batteries in second use battery energy storage systems and lists the developments needed to allow their future uptake.
It shows that nearly all storage systems are based on lithium-ion batteries from BEV, mostly making use of spent batteries from Nissan, Renault, or Volkswagen which mainly use NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt, the cathode composition) based battery chemistry.
At present, the main profit models of energy storage power stations are reducing power abandonment and participating in peak shaving. Most energy storage power stations use LFP batteries with the largest market share, the highest technical maturity and the most complete standards. The service life of the power station is designed to be 20 years.
