Definition: The lead acid battery which uses sponge lead and lead peroxide for the conversion of the chemical energy into electrical power, such type of battery is called a lead acid battery. The lead acid battery is most commonly used in the power stations and substations because it has higher cell voltage and lower cost.
The lead-acid battery mainly uses two types of charging methods namely the constant voltage charging and constant current charging. It is the most common method of charging the lead acid battery. It reduces the charging time and increases the capacity up to 20%. But this method reduces the efficiency by approximately 10%.
The lead-acid battery uses lead and lead dioxide electrodes with a sulfuric acid electrolyte. It works through oxidation-reduction reactions between the electrodes and electrolyte. When charged, excess electrons in the lead electrode generate an electric field, while the lead dioxide electrode has a electron deficit.
Discharging of a lead acid battery is again involved with chemical reactions. The sulfuric acid is in the diluted form with typically 3:1 ratio with water and sulfuric acid. When the loads are connected across the plates, the sulfuric acid again breaks into positive ions 2H+ and negative ions SO 4.
Do not deep discharge the battery less than 1.7V per cell. To store a lead acid battery, it needs to be completely charged then the electrolyte needs to be drained. Then the battery will become dry and can be stored for a long time period.
If we break the name Lead Acid battery we will get Lead, Acid, and Battery. Lead is a chemical element (symbol is Pb and the atomic number is 82). It is a soft and malleable element. We know what Acid is; it can donate a proton or accept an electron pair when it is reacting.
Working Principle Of Lead Acid Battery
From the above chemical reaction equation, it can be seen that when the lead-acid battery is discharging, the active material lead dioxide of the positive electrode and the active material lead metal of the negative electrode react with the sulfuric acid electrolyte to form lead sulfate, which is called "bisulfate reaction" in electrochemistry. At the end of battery discharge, …
