Because the heat exchange effect of aluminium foam on forced air cooling is more obvious at high mass flow rate, and the temperature of the rear half part of batteries is much lower compared with low air velocity. Thereby the temperature uniformity of battery module will become worse in case 1 at high mass flow rate.
Additionally, the thermal interaction between battery cells becomes more obvious after using metal foam. Changing the air flow direction of cooling air from length direction to width direction, the average temperature of all batteries increased, but temperature difference decreased.
Therefore, the amount of metal foam in actual application of battery thermal management system can be further lower, which will further reduce pressure drop, pumping power and extra weight. Fig. 20 shows the three-dimensional temperature field of battery module using the modified aluminium foam heat sink at 60 gs −1.
Compared with the case without metal foam, it is shown that combining metal foam with forced air cooling can significantly improve the average surface temperature of the battery module, but the temperature difference of cells increases. Temperature field uniformity of the lithium-ion battery pack is tough problem at low mass flow rates.
