Current collectors in lead acid batteries are made of lead, leading to the low-energy density. In addition, lead is prone to corrosion when exposed to the sulfuric acid electrolyte. SLI applications make use of flat-plate grid designs as the current collectors, whereas more advanced batteries use tubular designs.
Lead-acid battery also delivers the lowest CO 2 emissions throughout the life-cycle (a quarter of that for LIBs) , . Its excellent safety record makes it a reliable option for renewable energy integration, particularly suitable for smart grids and remote area power supplies .
Battery assembly and test We used the commercial Pb and PbO 2 electrodes (300 mA h) supplied by Jinshen Corp., China. The effective dimension was 1 × 1 cm 2. In the cell configuration, the lead electrodes were separated by a glass-microfiber separator. Two GDEs were respectively placed next to Pb and PbO 2 electrodes with a sandwiched separator.
Lead-acid batteries are still promising as ener- gy sources to be provided economically from worldwide. From the issue of resources, it is the improvement of the lead-acid battery to support a wave of the motorization in the developing countries in the near future.
The test electrode was a pure lead plate (99.997%) of 10 mm×10mm×1.0mm. Small piece of lead-grids without active materials of a commericially available battery was also tested. The concentratin of the additives were usual- ly adjusted at 0.01%in 5M (M=mol dm−3) sulfuric acid.
In fact, lead-acid battery has various intrinsic advantages that are not shared by other major counterparts. For instance, all the materials used are earth-abundant with low cost. Its simple electrode configuration and composition also lead to much lower energy cost during manufacturing and recycling , .

Lead-Acid Battery Basics
Lead-Acid Battery Cells and Discharging. A lead-acid battery cell consists of a positive electrode made of lead dioxide (PbO 2) and a negative electrode made of porous metallic lead (Pb), both of which are immersed in a sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4) water solution. This solution forms an electrolyte with free (H+ and SO42-) ions. Chemical reactions ...
