With increasing demand for Li-ion batteries, studies are focusing on enhancing battery performance and safety. However, studies on battery cases remain scarce. Herein, we propose the use of super duplex stainless steel SAF2507, which is a two-phase (austenite + ferrite) steel, for battery casings.

Can steel casings improve battery performance?

These steel casings comprise over one quarter of total battery cell mass and do not actively contribute to battery capacity. It is therefore possible to achieve considerable battery performance improvements, in terms of device energy density, by reducing the mass of the battery casing.

In consideration of the further down-sizing of electronic devices, especially in thick- ness, and consequent need for thinner batteries in the future, the stainless steel foil of NSMAT is the most suitable for the base mate- rial of laminate pouches.
