The long-term aim of the Government of The Gambia for the Energy Sector, as enshrined in the Vision 2020 document, is to maximise the efficient development and utilisation of scarce energy resources to support economic development in an environment-friendly way.
Improving energy infrastructure is consistent with the EU "Agenda for Change" policy, which identifies energy as an essential driver of economic growth. The project will contribute to reducing the existing electricity supply gap in The Gambia using sustainable solar energy resources.
Facilitate the membership and active participation of The Gambia’s Energy Sector in relevant international Organisations. Enhance energy supply security by; inter alia, contributing to the realisation of the primary objective of the OMVG Minimum Programme – to develop the Energy Sector.
The development of solar PV energy in The Gambia contributes to EU and national targets for renewable energy generation and the Bank's renewable energy and energy efficiency and climate objectives.
Promote the hydrocarbon potential of the Gambia to attract foreign direct investment in petroleum exploration and production. GOTG to undertake local initiatives to promote activities in the Sub-sector. Promote Sub-regional cooperation in hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation.
It is acknowledged that through this policy Gambia Government grants duty-free concessions to items imported into the country for use in the Energy Sector, such as for electricity generation and distribution, and renewable energy – solar, wind and hydro-energy.
