Storing 800 MWh of energy across 3.5 hectares The battery energy storage system (BESS) park in Vilvoorde, Belgium, one of the largest in Europe, will cover 3.5 hectares – about the size of 3.3 football fields. The site will accommodate 320 battery modules, measuring 25 x 4 x 3 metres.
Europe's largest energy storage facility has begun operating in the Belgian province of Wallonia, as the continent aims to secure its energy supply. The 40 lithium-ion mega-batteries allow for stable energy distribution across the public grid even when wind or solar power inputs fluctuate.

The BESS will store 800 MWh of energy in 320 battery modules, providing electricity for 96,000 households for four hours. ENGIE will complete the project in two phases: 100 MW by September 2025 and another 100 MW by January 2026. Additionally, ENGIE has a 15-year contract with Elia, the national grid operator, for this project.
