Power batteries are the core of new energy vehicles, especially pure electric vehicles. Owing to the rapid development of the new energy vehicle industry in recent years, the power battery industry has also grown at a fast pace (Andwari et al., 2017).
The full impact of novel battery compounds on the environment is still uncertain and could cause further hindrances in recycling and containment efforts. Currently, only a handful of countries are able to recycle mass-produced lithium batteries, accounting for only 5% of the total waste of the total more than 345,000 tons in 2018.
Scientific Reports 14, Article number: 688 (2024) Cite this article The negative impact of used batteries of new energy vehicles on the environment has attracted global attention, and how to effectively deal with used batteries of new energy vehicles has become a hot issue.
Also, since large scale, cheap ways to recycle Li batteries are lagging behind, only about 5% of Li batteries are recycled globally, meaning the majority are simply going to waste. But as demand for EVs escalates, as it's projected to, the impetus to recycle more of them is set to barrel through the battery and motor vehicle industry.
As a core component of NEVs, the cost of batteries accounts for 40 % of the cost of NEVs and can be as high as 60 % when the supply of raw materials is unstable . The raw materials for NEV batteries are expensive and depend on foreign imports, leading to instability in the supply chain .
This article offers a summary of the evolution of power batteries, which have grown in tandem with new energy vehicles, oscillating between decline and resurgence in conjunction with industrial advancements, and have continually optimized their performance characteristics up to the present.

In general, energy density is a key component in battery development, and scientists are constantly developing new methods and technologies to make existing batteries more energy proficient and safe. This will make it possible to design energy storage devices that are more powerful and lighter for a range of applications. When there is an imbalance between supply …
Editor''s note: This is part one of a five-part feature series on global battery supply chains. The reporting borrows from a new season of The Big Switch called "The Great Battery Boom," produced by Columbia''s Center on Global Energy Policy and Latitude Studios. Listen to episode one below, or find the show anywhere you get your podcasts.
With the rapid increase in the use of new energy vehicles, many power batteries that should be recycled have been scrapped, and improvements in the greenness of power batteries at the R&D stage will positively affect the recovery of power batteries (Zhu & Li, 2020).
