Electric vehicles are a great way to reduce carbon emissions, save money and become part of the EV revolution. As the cost of electric vehicles continues to fall and the infrastructure for charging continues to expand, Canberra is well-positioned to become a leader in the transition to a low-emissions transport future.
The government plans to install 77 charging stations across the region by 2023. Of these, 31 will be located in Canberra, where demand is highest. As part of the ACT Zero Emission Vehicle strategy, the aim is to expand the charging network to 180 public stations by 2025. This reduces charging times and helps tackle range anxiety among EV drivers.
So, Buying an EV is worth considering if you want to reduce your carbon footprint and be part of Canberra’s growing EV community. According to Minister Rattenbury, “We know the Canberra community is committed to taking action on climate change, with many people doing what they can cut emissions ways across the city.
Adding home EV charging infrastructure and second-hand EVs to the Scheme will encourage more Canberrans to consider purchasing a zero emissions vehicle – including second-hand zero emission vehicles.
Canberrans overwhelmingly support electric vehicles, but are deterred by high cost of purchase and lack of charging infrastructure. Government support is needed. The ACT Greens will not allow the policy vacuum left by a climate-denying Federal Government spreading mistruths about electric vehicles to continue.
It will show how cities like Canberra can achieve net zero emissions in a reliable and affordable way. According to project lead, Dr Bin Lu, the study will provide a template for the rest of the country. “Canberra is a national leader in the renewable energy transition. Things are happening much faster here than the rest of Australia,” Dr Lu said.
