Market research and numerous reports have shown that the value of the global solar cell market was approaching $ 40 billion in 2020, and between 2021 and 2028, this value is expected to upsurge at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 15% .
To enter the already mature photovoltaic market represented by Si solar cells, one plausible approach is to construct tandem solar cells with them to make full of the well-established production lines, which can break through the efficiency limit of single-junction solar cells and increase the overall power output of the module per unit area.
Silicon-based solar cells are still dominating the commercial market share and continue to play a crucial role in the solar energy landscape. Photovoltaic (PV) installations have increased exponentially and continue to increase. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of cumulative PV installations was 30% between 2011 and 2021 .
However, challenges remain in several aspects, such as increasing the production yield, stability, reliability, cost, and sustainability. In this paper, we present an overview of the silicon solar cell value chain (from silicon feedstock production to ingots and solar cell processing).
A significant portion of the increase came from China, which deployed around 250 GWdc of solar. Overall, analysts expect the industry to continue to grow, however the range of near-term growth projections is substantial. Notes: E = estimate; P = projection.
Researches have been focused on the transition from lab to fab for both academia and industry. Currently, perovskite solar cells are in the early stages of industrialization, with a growing number of start-ups and new-energy enterprises starting to deploy production lines.
