According to some projections, by 2030, the cost of lithium-ion batteries could decrease by an additional 30–40%, driven by technological advancements and increased production. This trend is expected to open up new markets and applications for battery storage, further driving economic viability.
By the beginning of 2023 the price of lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in energy storage, had fallen by about 89% since 2010. This reduction is attributed to advancements in technology, economies of scale in production, and increased market competition.
As a result, LFP batteries increased from 6% of the lithium-ion battery market in 2020 to 27% in 2022 (International Energy Agency). The shift to LFP batteries may bring relief to the cobalt supply chain, but it also presents a challenge for battery recyclers, who target high-value critical materials for extraction.
Electric vehicles (EVs) powered by lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have emerged as one of the most promising options (Crabtree, 2019).
