Many methods have been introduced to reduce energy consumptions and the costs of HVAC systems. Along with reducing the operating cost of HVAC systems, ice thermal energy storage (ITES) systems, also called the ice storage system (ice-ss or ISS), have significant advantages in decreasing the peak cooling loads and the capacity of chillers.
Among all the available cool thermal storage systems, the use of ice due to its high latent heat of fusion (hsf = 334 kJ/kg ) was considered as the most popular technique during the past decade, especially when the available space is limited. Employing the ice allows the greater part of the base load to be stored for further use .
Ice storage heating, also known as this, involves the use of a heat pump to freeze water in a storage tank. In this application, the frozen ice is used to cool the rooms in summer. The system may have a long charging and discharging time.
A fast-reacting thermal ice storage system is necessary if it is to cover the peak cooling demand during the day or the entire cooling demand of one day. It must absorb the entire energy during the few night hours and dynamically release it again during the day when cooling is required.
The ice thermal storage system, the base of which is the temperature stratified water thermal storage, is adopted to make the size of the thermal storage tank smaller and improve the thermal storage efficiency by reducing the heat-loss. 1. The fundamental concept of an ice storage cooling system is to operate a chiller during periods of low utility rates (typically at night) to transform a volume of liquid water, held in one or more large, unpressurized, insulated containers, into ice. This ice is then melted to supply cooling during the subsequent peak loading period.

Ice storage air conditioning is the process of using ice for thermal energy storage. The process can reduce energy used for cooling during times of peak electrical demand. Alternative power sources such as solar can also use the technology to store energy for later use. This is practical because of water''s large heat of fusion: one metric ton of water (one cubic metre) can store 334 megajoules (MJ…
