Jean-Bernard Lévy, EDF Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer: “The new Romanche-Gavet hydroelectric plant bears testimony to EDF’s ability to develop hydropower, the largest source of renewable energy, whilst at the same time protecting the environment.
With a capacity of 97 MW, the new Romanche-Gavet hydroelectric plant can increase power output by 40% along the same stretch of river (La Romanche). This structure illustrates the commitment to developing hydropower, the largest source of renewable energy in France and Europe.
Owned and operated by state-run Electricité de France (EDF), the Grand Maison hydroelectric has been in service since 1986. The pumped storage hydropower project involved the construction of the Grand Maison Dam (Barrage de Grand’Maison) on L’Eau d’Olle, a tributary of the Romanche River.
Comprising a new dam as well as a new underground plant in the depths of the mountain, the hydroelectric plant is replacing six old plants and five old dams. Blending seamlessly into the landscape of the Romanche valley, the structure protects the environment and preserves biodiversity.

Approach to Transformational Change: The project will blend public and private financing to support the construction of 450 MW pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES). This would contribute to balancing supply and demand in the power grid, supported by the integration of variable renewable energy (RE) sources such as wind and solar and ...
The Grand''Maison hydroelectric dam, the most powerful in France, plays a crucial role in absorbing peaks in consumption and overproduction linked to the boom in intermittent renewable energies. Pumped storage power stations (PSTPs), like Grand''Maison, are becoming essential for storing electricity and supporting the growth of green ...
Hydroelectricity is the second largest source of electricity production after nuclear energy and the primary source of renewable electricity in France. Flexible and storable, it contributes actively to the balance of the electricity system and to network safety.
Considering energy and market demand dynamics, variable renewable generation, and integration, STOR-HY addresses climate change effects and enhances flexibility and resilience of the EU energy grid. The project focuses on optimizing plant availability, offering increased storage potential, peak shaving, fast response regulation, and ancillary ...
The project will also benefit from subsidies granted by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME). Contractors involved in the Western French Guiana hydrogen power project. Siemens Energy has been awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the CEOG power project.
Pumped storage hydropower is a type of hydroelectric power generation that plays a significant role in both energy storage and generation. At its core, you''ve got two reservoirs, one up high, one down low. When electricity demand is low, excess energy from the grid is used to pump water from the lower to the upper reservoir. This process turns electric motors into generators, …
EDF, the France-based energy giant, has unveiled plans to develop a 5 GW pumped hydro storage facility in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. This ambitious project aims to store energy for up to 12 hours, providing crucial support for grid stability as renewable energy becomes an increasingly significant part of the UAE''s energy portfolio.
Similarly, India has also been advancing pumped storage projects to address renewable energy intermittency challenges, with the Ministry of Power announcing budgetary support for hydro and pumped storage projects amounting to Rs 124.6 billion. This initiative will support 31 GW of cumulative hydroelectric capacity, including 15 GW dedicated to pumped …
The Marmora Pumped Storage Project is an innovative 400 MW energy facility set on abandoned mining land. Using a closed-loop system, it transforms a water-filled pit into a Lower Reservoir and reshapes waste rock into an Upper Reservoir, connected by an underground hydraulic circuit.
The project tested out a new system – a "hydraulic short circuit" – at the Grand''Maison dam in the French Alps, the largest pumped storage hydropower installation of Europe. At peak capacity, it can feed 1 800 megawatts of energy into the grid, equivalent to a mid-sized natural gas or coal plant.
