Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) systems exploit difference in energy potential between two different heights to storage energy. PHES systems are operated by pumping and swirling the water between two dams. Water is pumped using off-peak electricity and discharged in peak hours.
The pumped hydro energy storage system (PHS) is based on pumping water from one reservoir to another at a higher elevation, often during off-peak and other low electricity demand periods. When electricity is needed, water is released from the upper reservoir through a hydroelectric turbine and collected in the lower reservoir .
Due to the significant advantages and working history of this method of energy storage, there are many working examples of pumped hydro energy storage systems exceeding 200 MW installed capacity worldwide including Bath County, USA (2710 MW), Kannagawa, Japan (2700 MW), Guangzhou, China (2400 MW) and Lac des Dix, Switzerland (2009 MW) .
The opportunities and barriers to pumped-hydro energy storage in the United States were studied by Yang et al. . Most existing pumped hydro storage is river-based in conjunction with hydroelectric generation. Water can be pumped from a lower to an upper reservoir during times of low demand and the stored energy can be recovered at a later time.
Off river PHES is likely to have low environmental impact and low water consumption. Importantly, the known cost of pumped hydro storage allows an upper bound to be placed on the cost of balancing 100% variable renewable electricity systems.
