Single crystalline silicon is usually grown as a large cylindrical ingot producing circular or semi-square solar cells. The semi-square cell started out circular but has had the edges cut off so that a number of cells can be more efficiently packed into a rectangular module.
During recent years, a lot of effort has been taken to achieve the very limits for single junction silicon solar cells experimentally. The highest efficiencies reported so far are 26.7% for n-type and 26.1% for p-type [ 5] silicon solar cells.
Solar panels in a single photovoltaic array are connected in the same way that PV cells are connected in a single panel. The panels in an array can be linked in series, parallel, or a combination of the two, although in most cases, a series connection is selected to enhance the output voltage.
The construction of a simple silicon solar cell is shown in Figure 1. The solar cell is like a p-n junction diode. Silicon with embedded metal elements is used on the upper side of the electrode to avoid prenetration of direct solar irradiation.
The device structure of a silicon solar cell is based on the concept of a p-n junction, for which dopant atoms such as phosphorus and boron are introduced into intrinsic silicon for preparing n- or p-type silicon, respectively. A simplified schematic cross-section of a commercial mono-crystalline silicon solar cell is shown in Fig. 2.
Commercially, the efficiency for mono-crystalline silicon solar cells is in the range of 16–18% (Outlook, 2018). Together with multi-crystalline cells, crystalline silicon-based cells are used in the largest quantity for standard module production, representing about 90% of the world's total PV cell production in 2008 (Outlook, 2018).

In single crystalline silicon material the crystal orientation is defined by Miller indices. A particular crystal plane is noted using parenthesis such as (100). Silicon has a cubic symmetrical cubic structure and so (100), (010) etc are equivalent planes and collectively referred to using braces {100}. Similarly, the crystal directions are defined using square brackets, e.g. [100] and ...
