The vehicle battery manufacturing plant by Airumi New Energy would be implemented in two phases, with the first phase expected to produce 400, 000 batteries through a US$30 million investment. The second phase, with an investment of US$45 million, would double the battery production to 800, 000.
The two border states have signed a memorandum of understanding to create a joint value chain for the electric mobility and clean energy sectors. The positioning of Africa as a world leader in the manufacture of electric batteries will undoubtedly involve the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia.
The project, called the “Republic of Zambia and DRC Battery Council”, will be implemented on two sites, one in the Congolese province of Haut-Katanga and the second in Copperbelt, a border region (Zambia) particularly rich in mineral deposits, including copper.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, President Hakainde Hichilema said the signing of cooperation agreements between Zambia and the DRC to start manufacturing electric car batteries is key milestone towards poverty alleviation in Zambia and DRC.
“We fully welcome and support the Operationalisation of this agreement” Mr Masuwa said. Zambia Association of Manufacturers president Ashu Sagar said the private sector will play its role in seeing to it that the programme succeeds.
Mr Mulenga and Mr Kahongya in Zambia and DRC joint communique resolved that the two countries agreed to set up DRC-Zambia Battery Council to oversee the implementation of the cooperating agreement for the electric car battery value chain for the benefit of the two countries.
The Cooperation Agreement is expected to provide a framework for bilateral cooperation on the initiative to develop the battery value chain as well as strengthen collaboration between Zambia and DRC. Once actualised, the combined strategy will create jobs for Congolese and Zambians and boost economies of the two countries.
