Saint John Energy is adding battery power to its grid. The utility says the battery power will lead to fewer greenhouse gas emissions and save money. Tim Roszell has more. – Jan 6, 2020 Tucked in, at the back of the Millidgeville Substation in Saint John’s north end, is a Tesla lithium-ion Megapack battery.
It is sometimes described as an outport within the city of St. John's and is noted for its steep slopes, and colourful houses. The Battery has been the site, over the centuries, for gun emplacements (batteries), such as Fort Waldegrave, for the defence of St. John's Harbour, including during both World Wars.
Saint John Energy decided to add a battery storage site at Burchill partly due to the success the company has seen with their first Megapack project. Installed in 2020, the company was expecting to see large savings, and the Megapacks delivered just that, with Saint John Energy saving over $109,000 in the first year of operation.
The battery project is the largest battery in New Brunswick. It consists of a 5.8 megawatt / 11.6 megawatt-hour lithium-ion battery that can deliver 5.8 megawatts of energy to the Saint John Energy grid for a two-hour period on a full charge.
