Solar cycles are nearly periodic 11-year changes in the Sun 's activity that are based on the number of sunspots present on the Sun's surface. The first solar cycle conventionally is said to have started in 1755. The source data are the revised International Sunspot Numbers (ISN v2.0), as available at SILSO.
At the beginning of a solar cycle, the Sun has the fewest sunspots (the solar minimum). The number of sunspots peak in the middle of the cycle (the solar maximum). After the solar maximum, the number of sunspots decreases again and a new cycle begins.
A solar battery cycle refers to the process of charging and discharging a battery using solar energy. A battery’s cycle life is the number of times it can be fully charged and discharged before its capacity significantly decreases.
Sunspot counts exist since 1610 but the cycle numbering is not well defined during the Maunder minimum. It was proposed that one cycle might have been lost in the late 18th century, but this remains not fully confirmed. Solar cycles can be reconstructed indirectly, using the radiocarbon 14 C proxy, for the last millennium.
The current study investigated a solar thermal power plant to simultaneously produce multiple energy outputs, including electric power, process heating, and cooling. This integrated approach aligns with the concept of a tri-generation system, where three different forms of energy are produced from a single source.
Although the most common scheme of solar integration in CCs is the solar heat supply into the SRC, particularly at the high-pressure level (ISCC technology), the option of integration into the gas turbine has been explored as well. Some layouts regarding the integration into the Brayton cycle have been already described in Section 3.2.
