Internally fused capacitors were used extensively in the past when the element technology was all-paper or paper- film. The individual can is constructed from series groups of parallel capacitor elements, each element individually fused within the can (refer to Figure 1a).
If each unit in a capacitor bank has its own fuse, the bank can continue operating without interruption even if one unit fails, until the faulty unit is removed and replaced. Another major advantage of providing fuse protection to each unit of the bank is that, it indicates the exact location of the faulty unit.
Externally Fused Capacitor Bank: Each capacitor unit has an external fuse; if a unit fails, the fuse blows, allowing the bank to continue operating. Internally Fused Capacitor Bank: Features internal fuses for each capacitor element; the bank can still run even if multiple elements fail, but may require full replacement if many fail.
The fuse for an individual unit in a capacitor bank must withstand the energy contributed to the failed unit by other capacitors in the same phase group. Short circuit (interrupting) – Must be greater than the short-circuit current that will ow when the capacitor unit is shorted.
In this design, a fuse is simply a piece of wire specifically selected based on the internal design of the unit to melt under fault conditions. Because each element is protected with a fuse inside the capacitor unit, the I2R loss is much higher (e.g. 50% higher) compared to unfused unit construction.
Element Fuse Protection: Built-in fuses in capacitor elements protect from internal faults, ensuring the unit continues to work with lower output. Unit Fuse Protection: Limits arc duration in faulty units, reducing damage and indicating fault location, crucial for maintaining capacitor bank protection.
Internal fuses in capacitor units
Internal fuses in capacitor units There are two types of fuses used for capacitors; internal and external. When the reactive power of a capacitor unit was only a few kvar, the most natural method to protect the capacitor was with an external fuse, since in the case of a breakdown the lost reactive power was small. However, now that one ...
