As a dielectric, mica provides capacitors with stable, highly accurate capacitance values. Mica capacitors exhibit low losses, which means they have a high quality factor (Q) and low dissipation factor (DF). For an explanation of these terms, read: The engineer’s capacitor glossary: All terms and acronyms defined.
A quintessential mica capacitor embodies several core components: 1.Mica Dielectric: The heart of the capacitor lies within the mica dielectric—a wafer-thin sheet of mica material. Mica assumes this role by virtue of its stability and insulating prowess.
After the layers are assembled, electrodes are added and the assembly is encapsulated. Ceramics or epoxy resins are used as encapsulation material in order to protect the silver-mica capacitor from outside effects such as moisture. Silver mica capacitors have a relatively small capacitance value: usually between a few pF, up to a few nF.
The tolerance for a mica capacitor can be as low as +/-1%. When compared to something like ceramic which has a tolerance of +/-20%, mica is much more useful in environments where stability is important. It is common in applications where low capacitance but high stability is called for, such as RF transmitters and power circuits.
The dielectric can be inserted into the plates in two different ways. (i) when the capacitor is disconnected from the battery. (ii) when the capacitor is connected to the battery. In earlier discussions, we assumed that the space between the parallel plates of a capacitor is either empty or filled with air.
Although they were once very popular as quality capacitors, nowadays they are increasingly being replaced by other types of capacitors due to their size and cost, which can reach several USD a piece. In low power RF applications, a good replacement for mica capacitors are ceramic capacitors.
What is Mica Capacitor? Advantages and Disadvantages
As the name implies, silver mica capacitors have a mica dielectric which is silvered to produce the electrodes or plates of the capacitor. Mica is a shiny material from silicate minerals with a layered or monoclinic structure, which means that it can be easily split into thin plates. The material has a relatively large dielectric constant compared to many other typically …
