A variable capacitor is a type of capacitor that allows for adjustment of its capacitance within a certain range. It consists of two sets of pole plates, with one set being fixed (stator) and the other set movable (rotor). The capacitance of a variable capacitor changes as the relative effective area or distance between the plates is altered.
It should be noted from the specification in Fig. 21-4 that the nominal capacitance has a large tolerance (400 pF to 600 pF), and this must be taken into account when using the C T / V R graphs. The major application of Voltage Variable Capacitors is as tuning capacitors to adjust the frequency of resonance circuits.
The capacitance of a variable capacitor is determined by the overlapping area and distance between the rotor and stator plates. When the rotor plates are fully screwed into the fixed plates, the capacitance is at its maximum. Conversely, when the rotor plates are completely rotated out of the fixed plates, the capacitance is at its minimum.
The fixed capacitors are the ones whose value is fixed at the time of manufacturing itself and the variable ones provide us with an option to vary the value of capacitance. Let us know something about the variable capacitors whose value alters when you vary, either electrically or mechanically.
Testing the capacitance of a variable capacitor can be challenging due to their small values. However, it is possible to check for continuity or leakage between the moving and fixed plates. By using a multimeter's electric block, the resistance can be measured between the rotor and stator of the capacitor.
Maximum capacitance is achieved when the plates are "meshed" together, that is, they are inter-laced. Minimum capacitance is achieved when the plates are "unmeshed", that is, they are not inter-laced.
