Omaha, Neb.-based developer Tenaska is proposing a $250 million battery storage project on the east side of town, which would be among the first of its kind in Washington. Residents worry about the project’s location on agricultural land and proximity to Hansen Creek, which is a critical salmon habitat.
The center, based in Richland, Wash., aims to bring together researchers and industry partners to develop grid-scale energy storage technologies for all stages of the battery development cycle. State-of-the-art batteries are crucial to storing energy harnessed from the sun, or serving as backups during power outages.
Washington’s largest utility will add its first large-scale solar and battery storage projects to comply with the state’s ambitious clean energy law. The solar project will be built in Pomeroy, Garfield County, near Puget Sound Energy’s existing wind farm and will provide 142 megawatts of energy.
“Grid storage allows more wind and solar to be integrated into the grid. And the Northwest’s reliability to provide that clean source of energy will be, as it has been in the past, one of the big drivers of the Washington economy,” Cantwell said at the event.
Though battery energy storage projects are heralded by some as necessary for the future of the environment, others are concerned about the safety risks they bring to communities, particularly related to the potential for severe fires in a region already struggling with intense summer wildfires and understaffed fire departments.
