The "film capacitors" were developed together with the growing market of broadcast and electronic equipment technology in the mid-20th century. These capacitors are standardized under the rules of IEC/EN 60384-1 "Capacitors for use in electronic equipment" and different "film materials" have their own sub standards, the IEC/EN 60384- n series.
Film capacitors can be optimized through diferent materials and manufacturing methods. Capacitors are all unique; their fundamentals, the manufacturing processes, advantages and even technology trends are worth highlighting. There are diferent grades and applications critical to considering before choosing the best option.
These capacitors come with very specific advantages including non-polarity, a high insulation resistance, low dielectric losses and self-healing capability. Film capacitors can be optimized through diferent materials and manufacturing methods.
The film/foil variants of plastic film capacitors are especially capable of handling high and very high current surges. Typical capacitance values of smaller film capacitors used in electronics start around 100 picofarads and extend upwards to microfarads.
The primary distinction between a film foil capacitor and a metalized capacitor is that the metallic electrodes are fused into either side of the dielectric plastic in the latter instead of layering. While it raises the cost and also adds a step to the production process, it has greater reliability and smaller dimensions than a film foil condenser.
Vishay film capacitors uses the following film materials in their production: Polyester film offers a high dielectric constant, and a high dielectric strength. It has further excellent self-healing properties and good temperature stability. The temperature coefficient of the material is positive.

Film stretching and metallization — To increase the capacitance value of the capacitor, the plastic film is drawn using a special extrusion process of bi-axial stretching in longitudinal and transverse directions, as thin as is technically possible and as allowed by the desired breakdown voltage. The thickness of these films can be as little as 0.6 μm. In a suitable evaporation system and ...
A metal stacked film capacitor, also known as a metalized film capacitor, is a type of electronic component widely used in various applications for energy storage and voltage regulation. It belongs to the family of film capacitors, which are known for their excellent capacitance stability, high reliability, and low losses. They are designed to provide a compact …

What is Film Capacitor? A capacitor that uses a slight plastic film like a dielectric is known as a film capacitor. A Film capacitor is reasonably inexpensive, constant overtime, and constant overtime n includes equivalent series inductance (ESR) and low self-inductance, while some film capacitors can withstand large reactive power values.
Film dielectric capacitors have two different types of electrodes. These are a discrete foil, which is typically aluminum or a very thin metallization that is vacuum deposited on the film. In addition to two different electrodes, we also can divide the capacitors into AC and DC applications. This produces a two by two matrix. We can see for AC ...

These films are used in AC and pulse capacitors and interference suppression capacitors for mains applications. Film capacitors are build up by two electrodes (the capacitor plates) with plastic dielectric material in between. The type of electrode used determines whether the capacitor is a metalized film or film / foil type.
