Abstract: The driving range of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is greatly influenced by ambient conditions, especially at low temperatures. To address this, the battery and the passenger cabin can be preheated using energy from the electric grid. This is regarded as a strategy to reduce the energy consumption of these vehicles in winter.
Compared to other cold-weather batteries that researchers have reported so far, this one has a record-breaking lifetime of over a year. Today’s batteries work well at temperatures between 0 °C and 40 °C. For more widespread deployment, developers are striving to make batteries that work over a wider range of temperatures, from -40 °C to 60 °C.
Plus, it’s not ideal for cold-weather batteries for weight-sensitive applications, such as high-altitude drones and satellites. Many researchers are attempting to improve battery performance at low temperatures by focusing on the electrolytes that shuttle lithium ions between battery electrodes.
This is regarded as a strategy to reduce the energy consumption of these vehicles in winter. For long trips, preheating can indeed be translated into a slight increase in the driving range. However, for short trips, the amount of energy saved from the battery does not outweigh the additional energy demanded from the grid.
In the second test, covering a 609.8-kilometer route from Oulu to Helsinki, the T15E concluded the journey also in -20°C with a state of charge dropping from full to two percent and an energy consumption of just 0.94 kWh/km, reaffirming its ability in severe winter environments.
“The high energy density and long lifespan of lithium-ion batteries at low temperatures are key to the development of all-climate electric vehicles,” says Chong Yan of the Beijing Institute of Technology. To keep batteries working in the cold today, manufacturers add external insulation and heat.
