Unfortunately, a small but significant fraction of these systems has experienced field failures resulting in both fires and explosions. A comprehensive review of these issues has been published in the EPRI Battery Storage Fire Safety Roadmap (report 3002022540 ), highlighting the need for specific eforts around explosion hazard mitigation.
Coordination, planning, and communications before, during, and post-event can save lives and equipment. EPRI conducted evaluations of energy storage sites (ESS) across multiple regions and in multiple use cases (see Table 1) to capture the current state of fire prevention and mitigation.
A comprehensive review of these issues has been published in the EPRI Battery Storage Fire Safety Roadmap (report 3002022540 ), highlighting the need for specific eforts around explosion hazard mitigation. EPRI also maintains a database of BESS failures . Some BESS failures have resulted in significant consequences.
Utilities are uniquely positioned to impact energy storage safety practices, especially in the absence of clear risk mitigation guidelines. Effective solutions will require additional data to characterize technologies, integration practices, failure incidents and their impacts, as well as controlled testing and modeling to frame future solutions.
NFPA 855 recommends that a UL 9540A ( ANSI/CAN/UL, 2019) test be used to evaluate the fire characteristics of an ESS undergoing thermal runaway for explosion control safety systems. An approach to determine a flammable battery gas source term to design explosion control systems has been developed based on UL 9540A or similar test data.
Industry insights will be incorporated to guide utility owners, operators, and off-takers in their design, procurement, planning, and incident response. This project is expected to directly inform battery energy storage system (BESS) siting, community risk assessment, failure event impacts, and emergency response procedures.

How to Achieve Explosion Control in Energy Storage Systems
To prevent an explosion within an ESS, NFPA 855 states that flammable gas concentrations must not exceed 25 percent of the Lower Flammability Limit (LFL) where gas may accumulate. ESS''s that prove they are able to maintain the LFL under this threshold are exempt by NFPA 855 from requiring explosion prevention and venting.
