Researchers in the U.S. have created a new sodium battery architecture with stable cycling for several hundred cycles, which could serve as a future direction to enable low-cost, high-energy-density and fast-charging batteries.
All-solid-state Na-ion batteries incorporating amorphous Na 2 O 2 –HfCl 4 electrolyte and a Na 0.85 Mn 0.5 Ni 0.4 Fe 0.1 O 2 cathode exhibit a superior rate capability and long-term cycle stability, with 78% capacity retention after 700 cycles under 0.2 C (1C = 120 mA g −1) at room temperature.
As a proof of concept, an anode-free sodium all-solid-state battery with NaCrO 2 as the cathode, under 10 MPa stack pressure at 40 °C, was cycled for 400 cycles with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.96%.
