The US utility-scale storage sector saw tremendous growth over 2022 and 2023. The volume of energy storage installations in the United States in 2022 totaled 11,976 megawatt hours (MWh)—a figure surpassed in the first three quarters of 2023 when installations hit 13,518 MWh by cumulative volume.
Energy storage systems must develop to cover green energy plateaus. We need additional capacity to store the energy generated from wind and solar power for periods when there is less wind and sun. Batteries are at the core of the recent growth in energy storage and battery prices are dropping considerably.
In the third quarter of 2023, and despite significant delays in the market, the US storage market added a record-setting 2,354 MW and 7,322 MWh.
Thermal energy storage materials 1, 2 in combination with a Carnot battery 3, 4, 5 could revolutionize the energy storage sector. However, a lack of stable, inexpensive and energy-dense thermal energy storage materials impedes the advancement of this technology.

To meet these gaps and maintain a balance between electricity production and demand, energy storage systems (ESSs) are considered to be the most practical and efficient solutions.

Lithium-ion batteries dominate the market, but other technologies are emerging, including sodium-ion, flow batteries, liquid CO2 storage, a combination of lithium-ion and clean hydrogen, and gravity and thermal storage.
