The solar energy from the solar field can be potentially stored as chemical energy, through the endothermic fuel oxidation reaction in a chemical process. Thermochemical systems commonly require higher temperatures to initiate the energy storage, but conversely provide higher temperatures on the release of that energy.
The newer CSP plants have significant storage capacity from 5 to 8.5 h using 2 tank-indirect storage configurations. Nevertheless, the fact that more than half of the plants do not allow for energy storage is a sign of a need to develop and integrate energy storage systems for this CSP configuration. 4.2. Dish/engine parabolic systems
Concentrating solar power (CSP) with thermal energy storage has the potential for grid-scale dispatchable power generation. Thermochemical energy storage (TCES), that is, the reversible conversion of solar-thermal energy to chemical energy, has high energy density and low heat loss over long periods.
The most widespread storage materials used in TES systems are the molten salts which allow for the extension of the operating hours of CSP plants by storing energy as sensible heat during daylight hours. However, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) systems could enable higher conversion efficiencies in CSP plants in the medium–long term [ 6 ].
For illustration, mechanism of the working principal of a heliostat-type concentrated solar power (CSP) plant with a thermal energy storage (TES) is shown in Figure 1. The TES unit is in between the solar receiver (receptor) and electricity generator (turbine), which acts as a surplus energy storage medium.
Sensible heat storage has been already incorporated to commercial CSP plants. However, because of its potentially higher energy storage density, thermochemical heat storage (TCS) systems emerge as an attractive alternative for the design of next-generation power plants, which are expected to operate at higher temperatures.
