In the third generation, which are multi-junction solar cells, a network of diodes is the best model and the current-voltage relations can be calculated by determining the number of series and/or parallel junctions. The parallel connected diodes are increasing the final current and the series connected diodes can increase the final voltage as well.
A key problem in the area of photovoltaic cell development is the development of methods to achieve the highest possible efficiency at the lowest possible production cost. Improving the efficiency of solar cells is possible by using effective ways to reduce the internal losses of the cell.
Breakthroughs in the production of these cells include the introduction of an aluminum back surface field (Al-BSF) to reduce the recombination rate on the back surface, or the development of Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) technology to further reduce the recombination rate on the back surface 3. Second Generation of Photovoltaic Cells
The primary role of a photovoltaic cell is to receive solar radiation as pure light and transform it into electrical energy in a conversion process called the photovoltaic effect.
This was the driving force that led to the emergence of the second generation of thin film photovoltaic cells, which include CIGS. In terms of efficiency, the record value for CIGS is 23.4%, which is comparable to the best silicon cell efficiencies.
As the temperature rises, the kinetic energy of the charge carriers (electrons and holes) within the PV cell increases. Higher kinetic energy leads to more random movement of the charge carriers, which affects their ability to contribute to the cell’s electric current .

PV Cells 101: A Primer on the Solar Photovoltaic Cell
The electrons flow through the semiconductor as electrical current, because other layers of the PV cell are designed to extract the current from the semiconductor. Then the current flows through metal contacts—the grid-like lines on a solar cell—before it travels to an inverter. The inverter converts the direct current (DC) to an alternating current (AC), which …
