1. How to test a capacitor without capacitance measurement If only a simple multimeter without a function for capacitance measurement is available, then only the rough functionality of the capacitor or electrolytic capacitor (electrolytic capacitor) can be checked.
The only practical way to measure capacitance without a multimeter or capacitance meter is by noting the written value on the capacitor body. Which we covered in the above section. The rest of the methods is my try to share the knowledge that without a capacitance meter what are the other possible solutions?
There are several ways to test a capacitor to see if it still functions as it should. Disconnect the capacitor from the circuit it is part of. Read the capacitance value on the outside of the capacitor. The unit for capacitance is the farad, which is abbreviated with a capital “F.”
If there is no movement of the needle or the resistance always shows a higher value, the capacitor is an Open Capacitor. This test can be applied to both through hole and surface mount capacitors. The method described here is one of the oldest methods to test a capacitor and check whether it is a good one or a bad one.
Every attempt of the test should show similar result on the display for a good capacitor. If there is no change in the resistance in the further tests, the capacitor is dead. This method of testing the capacitor might not be accurate but can differentiate between a good and bad capacitors.
How the needle behaves determines whether or not the capacitor is good. If the needle initially shows a low resistance value then gradually moves towards infinity, the capacitor is good. If the needle shows a low resistance value and doesn’t move, the capacitor has been shorted out. You’ll need to replace it.
