The role of ports in the energy sector has long been significant, with over a third of current shipping linked to the transport and trade in fossil fuels. However, the dominance of coal, oil and gas will diminish as the world shifts towards cleaner energy solutions. How do ports and the wider maritime sector fit into the new, green energy world?
Because of the unique composition of the wider port area and the supply chains it services, each port presents a different energy landscape. Therefore, there is no optimal form of energy transition, but a variety of options and opportunities remain to be demonstrated and validated as commercially viable.
The energy transition of ports, including their further electrification, will likely result in a wide diversity of functions and power systems, underlining the enduring unique role each port plays. Because of the unique composition of the wider port area and the supply chains it services, each port presents a different energy landscape.
Whether it's supporting offshore wind, sustainable fuel trade, or transport decarbonisation, ports have significant potential as green energy hubs, which teams across Arup are helping realise. Ports are naturally intermodal transport hubs, acting as the interchange of ships, road and rail in the movement of goods and people.
In this evolving landscape, ports are emerging as critical enablers of the energy transition.
Without changes in policy, financing and wider support to drive change, ports risks becoming bottlenecks to the green energy transition. At Arup, we’re supporting policy makers, the energy sector, and investors – as well as ports themselves – to accelerate this transition.

Navigating to Net Zero: Energy Storage for Ports
"Large vessels will require in the order of 5MW per connection which could be a quarter or half the typical demand for a small to medium port. This connection will inevitably put stress on local energy networks, which requires either significant capital expenditure on reinforcement to remedy, or energy storage."
