Since 2017, the availability of needle coke and graphite electrodes has been under pressure due to substantial financially- and environmentally-driven capacity closures, particularly in China. As a result, prices for both materials have risen sharply and are expected to remain structurally high, at least in the medium term.
In this study, needle coke and pitch are used to characterize the reassembled particles of a negative electrode material of a lithium secondary battery, depending on the size of the filler. In this paper, an artificial graphite anode material (particle size: 10–15 μm) was manufactured from coke (10–15 μm) or from a composite material using coke 2–5 μm in size and the electrochemical properties of the manufactured material are measured and subjected to a comparison.
When a block is manufactured using coke at a particle size of 2–5 μm and an anode material is created with a particle size of 10–15 μm, voids capable of storing lithium ions between the coke particles form inside the anode material. These spaces are utilized and the capacity was measured.
A commercial type of needle coke (PMC Tech Co., Korea) was used as the filler, and pitch manufactured from a petroleum-based raw material was used as the binder to manufacturing the block used here. The physical characteristics of the needle-shaped coke and the pitch are shown in Tables 1 and 2, respectively.
Lithium foil was used as the counter electrode in the coin-type cells for the electrochemical test. The electrolyte was a 1 M LiPF 6 solution in a mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC) (1:1 vol.%. Wellcos Co., Republic of Korea) for electrochemical analysis at room temperature.
