Dr Nuria Tapia-Ruiz, who leads a team of battery researchers at the chemistry department at Imperial College London, said any material with reduced amounts of lithium and good energy storage capabilities are "the holy grail" in the lithium-ion battery industry.
This approach significantly enhances the battery’s cycle life and overall performance, potentially advancing the EV market, according to the team. Lithium-ion batteries, comprising a graphite anode and lithium metal oxide cathode, are common in EVs, utilizing an electrolyte to ferry lithium ions between electrodes.
The second reason was stated as “Lithium-ion batteries have also enabled the development of long-range electric cars and the storage of energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power.” In other words, it is expected to make a great contribution to the achievement of a sustainable society.
This indicates how the lithium-ion battery is supporting the steady advance of the electrification of mobility. The issue then becomes what path the electrification of mobility will follow beyond 2025, and what contribution the lithium-ion battery will make to the sustainability of society.
