S&P Global Commodity Insights launched nine new daily "black mass" evaluations last month "to bring greater transparency to pricing of the battery raw materials market." These complement its existing suite of daily battery metals assessments.
Black mass refers to the remains of a battery pack after it is shredded and processed. Depending on the type of battery being treated, it may contain volumes of materials such as nickel, cobalt and lithium, which may be recovered by processors and extracted into recycled battery raw materials.
As investment in lithium ion battery recycling capacity increases, the pricing and availability of black mass is becoming increasingly important. This valuable material, a mix of crushed metals produced by shredding battery scrap, is often exported to Asia from the West.
However, for those who can, black mass might just be the new “black gold.” The “black mass” that we’re referring to is the residual compound formed by “shredding” li-ion batteries that have reached the end of their usable life cycle.
RecycLiCo is among the first to be able to turn that black mass into “black gold,” recovering almost all of the cathode materials within black mass and upcycling them into battery-grade precursor cathode active material (pCAM) and lithium that can be used again in the battery manufacturing process. And batteries made from those recovered materials?

The hunt is ongoing, and escalating, for virgin sources of metals such as lithium, manganese, cobalt, and nickel for use in lithium-ion batteries ranging from those in watches and devices to utility-scale storage, electric vehicles (EVs), and oil- and gas-related applications.
