This paper discusses a low-cost laboratory experiment that will generate the I-V curve of solar cells that can be used in a curriculum. This experiment uses a low-cost data acquisition system, the LabVIEW program, and a current sink circuit made of discrete components.
The purpose of this article is to describe a very simple experiment that allows college students in introductory physics courses to plot the I-V characteristics of a solar cell, and hence measure important photovoltaic parameters, such as the fill factor (E) and light conversion efficiency.
Each lamp is at a distance of 35 cm from the centre of the solar cell. The intensity of the light incident on the solar cell was measured with a calibrated radiometer consisting of a PIN silicon photodiode and a radiometric filter. In the absence of a radiometer one can conduct the experiment on a clear bright day under conditions Figure 1.

A typical circuit for measuring I-V characteristics is shown in Figure-2. From this characteristics various parameters of the solar cell can be determined, such as: short-circuit current (I SC), the open-circuit voltage (V OC), the fill factor (FF) and the efficiency. The rating of a solar panel depends on these parameters.

How a Solar Cell Works? A solar photovoltaic (PV) cell converts sunlight to electricity. In the photoelectric effect at a metal surface, electrons are freed once the energy exceeds the bond energy. In a solar cell, an asymmetry is established by contacting two semiconductors of opposite polarity which drives electrons that are freed by the ...
